Dashain: a grand festival

Last Dashain is still so fresh in my mind. I remember waking up to the smell of sel roti frying in the kitchen. My mouth was watering before I even opened my eyes! Mom always makes the best sel roti, and Dashain just wouldn't be the same without it.

Hey everyone! Dashain is coming up, and I'm so excited I can hardly sit still! This year, the big moment we're all waiting for - the Bijaya Dashami Tika - is on 26th Ashoj 2081 (that's October 12, 2024, for those of us using the English calendar). And guess what? The luckiest time to get our tika is at 11:36 AM sharp

I spent the whole morning helping my little sister fly her first kite. We ran around the yard, laughing and shouting every time the kite dipped or soared. Her eyes were so wide with wonder, it made me remember my first time flying a kite too. It's funny how Dashain makes you feel like a kid again, no matter how old you are.

When it was time for the tika, I put on my new kurta, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. As I walked into the room where my parents and grandparents were seated, my heart was beating so fast! Grandpa's eyes crinkled with his smile as he called me over. His hands were a bit shaky, but so gentle as he placed the tika on my forehead. The cool touch of the rice grains and the bright red color always gives me goosebumps.

I remember Grandma sneaking extra dakshina into my hand with a wink. "Don't tell your cousins," she whispered, making me feel like her special grandchild. These little moments are what make Dashain so magical.

After the tika, we had the biggest feast ever! We all sat on the floor, plates piled high with delicious food. I stuffed myself with momo and sel roti, laughing at my uncle's silly jokes and listening to my cousins' stories. It felt like time stood still, like nothing existed outside our little bubble of happiness.

This year, knowing the exact lucky time for tika makes it even more exciting. I can just imagine all of us across Nepal, getting our blessings at the same moment. It's like we're all connected by an invisible thread of tradition and love.

I'm already planning what to wear and dreaming about all the yummy food. But more than anything, I'm looking forward to those precious moments with family - the stories, the laughter, and the feeling of belonging.

So, don't forget - October 12, 2024, at 11:36 AM. That's when the magic happens! I'm counting down the days, and I bet you are too. Let's make this Dashain the best one yet!
