Plug Valve Suppliers

Valvesonly Europe are leading Plug Valve Suppliers in Germany. A plug valve is a type of valve that uses a cylindrical or conically tapered plug to control the flow of a fluid through a pipe. By rotating the plug within the valve body, the flow can be either allowed to pass through or be blocked. The plug has one or more hollow passageways, typically aligned in such a way that fluid can flow through when the valve is in the open position and blocked when in the closed position. Plug valves are known for their simple design, reliable operation, and quick actuation, making them suitable for applications which requires fast and continuous operation. They are commonly used in industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, and water treatment due to their durability and ability to handle high-pressure and high-temperature conditions.

How is a plug valve used?

  • By rotating the plug inside the valve body, the flow of fluid can be started or stopped. When the plug's hollow passageway aligns with the inlet and outlet ports, the fluid flows through the valve. Rotating the plug by 90 degrees usually closes the valve, stopping the flow.
  • Although it is less common, plug valves can be used to regulate the flow to some extent by partially opening or closing the valve. However, they are mainly designed for full on/off control rather than changing the precise flow.
  • In multi-port plug valves, the design allows for directing the flow to different outputs. This is useful in complex piping systems where the flow needs to be routed to different process streams.
  • Plug valves are often used in applications where complete isolation of the fluid is necessary for safety or maintenance purposes. Their tight seal when closed ensures minimal leakage, making them suitable for handling hazardous or high-pressure fluids.
  • The quarter-turn action of a plug valve allows for rapid opening and closing, making it ideal for applications requiring quick response times.

What is the difference between Ball Valves and Plug Valves?

The main difference between plug valves and ball valves is their design, operation, and basic applications:

  • Design: Plug valves uses a cylindrical or conically tapered plug with a hollow passage through it. The plug rotates within the valve body to control flow. The flow path is typically straight through the plug when the valve is open. Ball Valves on the other hand use a spherical ball with a hole through its center. The ball rotates within the valve body to control flow. When the hole aligns with the inlet and outlet ports, fluid flows through; rotating the ball by 90 degrees blocks the flow.
  • Operation: Plug valve are operated by rotating the plug 90 degrees. They are known for their simple and robust design and can be used for quick shutoff applications. Ball Valves are also operated by rotating the ball 90 degrees. Ball valves provide excellent sealing and are widely used for their ability to open and close quickly and reliably.
  • Applications: Plug Valves are suitable for applications requiring frequent operation, such as in chemical processing, oil and gas, and water treatment. They are versatile and can handle fluids with suspended solids. Ball Valves are commonly used in applications where a tight seal and quick operation are essential, such as in gas systems, pipelines, and industrial processes. They are less suitable for fluids with high particulate matter compared to plug valves.
  • Maintenance: Plug Valves generally easier to maintain and can handle more abrasive and dirty fluids. However, they may require more frequent lubrication. Ball Valves usually require less maintenance but might be more susceptible to damage from particulate matter in the fluid.
